Economic and Social Council
- min readDelegation from the Republic of Chile
The issues presented before the Economic and Social Council are Empowering Women and Girls in the Achievement of the SDGs and Strengthening Humanitarian Assistance in the Face of Climate Crises. As a developing country committed to advancing human rights and addressing climate resilience, Chile stands firm in its dedication to tackling these pressing global challenges.
I. Empowering Women & Girls
Gender equality is a fundamental human right. Women represent 50% of the current population living in extreme poverty, and one in three women experience gender-based violence at least one point in their lives. Globally, gender equality contributes to sustainable development, economic growth, and the overall betterment of society.
However, persistent barriers such as gender-based violence, discriminatory norms, and unequal access to resources have disrupted progress. Chile recognizes that addressing these challenges is not just essential for justice, but also for building a more sustainable future.
Chile's Strategic Framework
Chile has long promoted gender equality in many ways. As a signatory of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and a key contributor to the Beijing Declaration of 1995, Chile has consistently advocated for the rights and liberties of women and girls. We have also endorsed UN General Assembly Resolution 77/193 to eradicate gender-based violence and dismantle harmful stereotypes.
"In 2022, Chile's government set a historical precedent by appointing a cabinet where women comprised 14 of its 24 total ministers, reflecting its feminist foreign policy agenda."
Our commitment is further highlighted by the leadership of former President Michelle Bachelet, who served as the first director of UN Women. Domestically, Chile has established the Ministry of Women and Gender Equity as a core political entity. Looking forward, Chile urges the international community to expand the adoption of feminist foreign policies worldwide. We strongly recommend prioritizing education and skill development to ensure women's full participation in economic and decision-making processes.
II. Humanitarian Assistance & Climate
Internationally, climate crises are creating devastation on a scale previously unimagined. The recurring droughts, wildfires, and floods have caused major humanitarian challenges worldwide.
Chile’s unique varying geography, scaling from the arid Atacama Desert to the Patagonian glaciers, makes it especially vulnerable to climate-related disasters. In recent years, destructive wildfires and severe droughts have interfered with agricultural production and displaced thousands. These events disproportionately impact vulnerable populations, including indigenous communities and people living in poverty.
Building Resilience
Chile has made numerous substantial efforts to address climate concerns, aligning its actions with SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Under the Paris Agreement, Chile committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
"Chile has already committed to transitioning to 70% renewable energy by 2030, demonstrating its leadership in sustainable development."
The Escazú Agreement demonstrates Chile's dedication to providing public access to environmental information and justice. Furthermore, we have implemented the National Climate Change Adaptation plan, outlining strategies for disaster early warning systems and strengthened infrastructure. Internationally, Chile collaborates with the Red Cross, OCHA, and WMO to provide effective humanitarian assistance.
Conclusion
To ensure accountability and progress, Chile advocates for convening regular international forums, such as the Regional Conference on Climate Resilience, to assess advancements and share experiences. Chile is committed to addressing the humanitarian challenges posed by climate crises.
Through national initiatives, regional collaboration, and active participation in global frameworks, Chile continues to work in building resilience and promoting sustainable development. As the international community confronts the growing threats of climate change, Chile reaffirms its dedication to strengthening humanitarian assistance.
